Benjamin Scott
Grief Therapist, BACP | End-Of-Life Doula
I'm Ben, a Grief Therapist living in Cornwall
I’m a professionally qualified Person-Centred Counsellor and registered member of the BACP, specialising in grief, bereavement and loss.
My interest in this work grew from experiencing how isolating grief can become once the immediate support around a bereavement begins to fade.
Experience Around Grief and Loss
I was trained by and have volunteered with Marie Curie on their Bereavement Support Line for the past six years, supporting people through many different experiences of grief and loss.
I am also trained as an End of Life Doula with Living Well Dying Well and have spent many years working around death, dying and bereavement.
That experience has taught me that grief rarely follows a neat pattern. It can affect the way we think, sleep, work, relate to other people and understand ourselves.
My Approach
My role is not to tell you what your grief should look like.
I work in a Person-Centred way, which means I try to understand your experience from your point of view rather than fitting it into a particular theory or set of stages.
I will not analyse you, tell you what your loss should mean, or decide where you ought to be by now.
There is no timetable you need to follow and no expectation that you should simply “move on”.
Sometimes counselling may simply mean having somewhere to talk and be heard.
At other times, you may want more information or guidance. If it feels useful, I can also share some of what we know about the psychology and biology of grief, different ways people have understood loss, or ideas that may help you make sense of what you are experiencing.
The important thing is that we work in a way that feels useful to you.
Learning To Live Alongside Loss
I believe grief is not something we necessarily “get over”.
The relationship with the person, role or part of life we have lost may continue to matter deeply. Over time, the aim is not to erase that grief, but to find a way of making room for it alongside the rest of your life.
That is what I mean when I talk about learning to live alongside loss.
